Speedrunning is a term that refers to completing a mission, campaign or other task in the fastest time possible. Speedrunning has a huge community in general, but for Galaxy on Fire, it is rather unheard of, and only a few speedruns have ever been recorded.

Known Speedruns

  • NiveliKing speedran the base game of Galaxy on Fire 2 HD for iPad with a time of 01:53:58.
    • He started the run from the opening cutscene, until the Void mothership destruction cutscene plays.
  • 8100DSTAR beat this time by a long shot, clocking in at 01:18:45.
    • He also started from the opening cutscene, but this time ran until the epilogue music begins playing.
    • The Void mothership destruction begins at 01:18:16.
  • A user known as lol_bye beat this record a mere few hours later, with a time of 1:08:58. The run remains private for now, but has been witnessed and verified by 8100DSTAR. However since it remains private, it is unofficial.
  • Another user known as eclairtleQAQ beat thrashed all previous runs with a record 00:45:14.8. This run made use of a relatively unknown item duplication glitch - whether or not this counts towards a legitimate speedrun is unknown currently. However as it stands, this is the fastest time ever recorded. It can be found here, albeit in low quality.
  • User known as RusAD started running this game in december 2019 and currently holds time of 00:57:19, He utilizes the same glitch as eclairtleQAQ. Video of the run can be seen here (verification by moderators pending)

Rules

Speedrunning rules are different for different games, but for Galaxy on Fire 2, there are only a few official rules:

  • Using modded items is not allowed, as they can give massively unfair advantages to users.
  • To be official, the runs must be recorded and publicly available to watch.

Tips

  • Scanners slow you down. Dismounting scanners allows you to fast-forward in hostile territory - a must for Mission 14.
  • Taking advantage of the Gunant's Drill glitch helps out a ton, as it allows you to quickly upgrade weapons, equipment and even ships, simply becuase the drill is worth so much. Serves Gunant right for selling Keith's Phantom.
  • Using bombs is by far the quickest way to destroy hostile ships. This is especially useful in Mission 13.
  • When it comes down to it, there is no point trying to autocomplete the Khador Drive - overall it is much quicker to use the scanner method.
  • Edos are surprisingly powerful for such cheap weapons. Stockpiling them really helps out.

A lot of these methods are overpowered by any weapon duplication glitches, which can result in a lot of credits very very quickly. Since GoF speedrunning is still relatively new/unheard of, whether or not duplication glitches are allowed is up for debate.
