The Black Guard is a faction introduced in Supernova.

Mentioned by Fishlabs as "an extremist Nivelian faction that wants to stop the Midorian secession.", they are responsible for igniting the Supernova in the Ginoya system and the attacks on various Midorian Evacuations, as well as against Keith T. Maxwell. Led by Trunt Harval, its ultimate goal is to obliterate the entire Midorian Sector as a retribution to their betrayal against the Nivelian Republic.

After the death of Trunt Harval at the end of the Supernova campaign, the Black Guard has been presumably disbanded.

Trivia

  • The Black Guard doesn't have a system in which they are but as Trunt Harval assumed political leadership around the time, they most likely came from Paréah, the capital of the Nivelian Republic .
  • The Black Guard were the only NPCS that utilize the Dark Matter Laser. The damage is significantly nerfed for balancing reasons.
    • The only known Black Guard personnel that does not use this weapon is Trunt Harval, who instead uses a weapon similar to the Disruptor Laser, with increased damage per shot. A bug can replace his weapons with Dark Matter Lasers, making him much easier to fight.
  • Ironically, the Ghost is never used by the Black Guard as a fighting ship, but rather as a prototype for the Specter and Scimitar.
  • The term "Black Guard" is almost never mentioned in-game.
  • They have more health compared to other NPC ships.
  • Like Pirates, the Specters piloted by the Black Guard has a chance to spawn everywhere (once the Luur Rescue Operation is complete), and will continue to spawn until the campaign ends. They are hostile to all factions.
    • Their spawn rate is not based on system security. For example you could even encounter them in Kothar, Thynome, or even Kaamo (where most NPC ships don't spawn).
  • The Specters they pilot are equipped with a U'Tool that allows them to activate stealth for 10 seconds. However, this form of stealth has a few deficiencies:
    • They can be given away by their flames once their health reaches 33% and the transparent distortion.
    • NPC ships may not be deceived and can continue attacking them per usual.
    • Transfusion Beams will still target and damage them.
    • Weapons like the M6A4 "Raccoon" can somehow track them if they wander within its range of fire.
  • The stealth fighters will only seem to cloak if they take damage from ship's weapons or if the player gets too close to them.
  • The Specters, like most other NPC ships, are technically not affected by Gamma Radiation despite the clear lack of a Gamma Shield. In-Universe however this may not be the case.
  • When scanned, they will be labelled as "???".
  • Similar to encountering Pirates/Voids, the event of encountering Black Guard ships has its own unique sound track.
  • Their symbol is that of the Abyss engine, the engine Galaxy on Fire uses to run.
  • Despite pirates being hostile to them, the Black Guard does not return fire.
