It';s not always about the stat or combat performance (let's not forget game balancing), the journey one takes is just as if not more important than the destination, and the ship itself (performance and looks et al.) can very well be used as a reward of some kind, though perhaps not an Easter Egg as the devs has originally intended.

But I do agree that it should be availible for everyone.
